Maid of honor speeches
Short maid of honor speech
Introduce yourself, tell one short story that shows who the bride is, say one thing to her partner and close with a wish, in about two minutes. One true story is enough.
Make this speech your own
Copy the script into your own document, then replace every bracketed marker with a true detail. The examples below are fictional prompts, not facts about the couple. Change or remove any sentence that does not reflect your relationship.
The // mark means pause; do not read it aloud. Use the default script, or swap in one of the openings or closings below. Do not add every alternative to the same speech.
With the fictional examples filled in, the default script is 228 words. At 125 words per minute, that is about two minutes. Your own details and pauses will change the time, so read your finished version aloud and time it.
Details to gather
SPEAKER — What name should you introduce yourself by? Fictional example: Riley
BRIDE — What name should you use for the bride? Fictional example: Jordan
PARTNER — What name should you use for her partner? Fictional example: Alex
RELATION — What is your relationship to the bride? Fictional example: friend since college
SHARED — What have you been through together? Name two or three things. Fictional example: two apartments and one very unreliable car
STORY — What short story shows who she is? Write two or three sentences. Fictional example: On our first trip together, we missed the last ferry. Instead of panicking, Jordan found a bakery that was still open and turned a stranded night into a picnic on the dock.
QUALITY — What does that story show about her? Fictional example: making the best of whatever happens
WISH — What do you wish for the couple? Fictional example: a life full of good surprises and the patience to enjoy them
Introduce yourself
Hi, everyone. I'm SPEAKER, BRIDE's RELATION, and I'm honored to be her maid of honor. I'm so glad you're all here. I'll keep this short, so you can get back to celebrating. //
Say what she has been to you
We've been through a lot together, from SHARED to more late-night phone calls than either of us could count. Through all of it, BRIDE has been the person I call first. //
Tell one story
There's one story I always tell about BRIDE. STORY // That's her gift: QUALITY. She has shown it to me more times than I can count, and to plenty of people in this room too. //
Speak to the partner
PARTNER, thank you for making my friend so happy. You make her laugh, you keep her calm, and you clearly think she's the most interesting person in any room, which she is. I've loved watching the two of you become a team, and I can't wait to see what you build together. //
Offer the wish and the toast
So my wish for you both is WISH. May your life together be full of good stories. Glasses up, everyone. To BRIDE and PARTNER.
Two optional openings
Good evening. I'm SPEAKER, and I have a short story, a big thank-you and one wish for BRIDE and PARTNER.
Hello, everyone. I'm the maid of honor, SPEAKER, and I promise this will be the shortest speech of the night.
Two optional closings
To BRIDE and PARTNER: may every bad day you share turn into a good story.
Please join me in celebrating BRIDE and PARTNER. Congratulations, you two.
Prepare a version you can say
Ask the couple how long you have. If several people are speaking, a two-minute speech is a gift to the room.
Practice the story out loud until you can tell it without reading every word. Keep the full text with you anyway.
For a cue card, write five words: hello, friendship, story, partner, wish.
Choose the story with care
Pick a story the bride would happily tell herself. Leave out exes, drinking, money and anything private.
Keep the line to the partner warm and true. If you don't know them well, thank them for making your friend happy and leave it there.
